Choline is a vitamin B-like compound and an essential nutrient needed to make compounds such as phosphatidylcholine, bile, acetylcholine, and betaine. Although the human liver can produce small amounts of choline, most of it must be obtained through diet. Unfortunately, studies have shown that over 90% of people do not get enough choline through diet alone. Additionally, certain populations, such as pregnant women and the elderly, have higher choline needs that may be difficult to meet through diet alone.
Perhaps the greatest need for choline occurs during gestation, as fetal development requires it for proper neurodevelopment. Not only is choline necessary for the manufacture of phosphatidylcholine and is therefore an important component of cell membranes, but it also plays a role in transporting nutrients across the placenta. Choline enhances the transport of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a fatty acid that is essential for the development of the baby’s brain and nervous system. In fact, low choline intake during pregnancy has been shown to increase the risk of neural tube defects in unborn babies, independent of folate intake. Low choline intake has also been associated with an increased risk of other pregnancy complications, including preterm birth and low birth weight.
It is worth noting that choline's influence on fetal and child development appears to last for years. Specifically, one study showed that higher choline intake during the third trimester of pregnancy improved children's information processing speed and visuospatial memory. A follow-up study then showed that these same children still had better sustained attention seven years later, compared to the group that consumed less choline.
At the other end of the life spectrum, older adults are another population vulnerable to the effects of low choline intake. Large observational studies link choline intake and blood choline levels to improved brain function, memory, and processing in this population. This makes sense given that choline is needed to make acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter involved in memory and muscle function. An intervention trial in adults aged 50 to 85 with memory impairment showed that supplementing with 1,000 mg per day improved both short- and long-term verbal memory.
Finally, given choline’s role in many biological functions, it’s not surprising that higher intakes have also been linked to a variety of physiological systems. For example, high choline intake is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease, likely due to its role in converting homocysteine to methionine and reducing levels in the body. Choline is also essential for making bile and removing cholesterol from the liver. In fact, one of the first signs of insufficient choline intake is the accumulation of fat and cholesterol in the liver.
Cyto-Choline provides 275 mg of choline per capsule for pregnant women to support fetal development and for adults concerned about optimal cognition and liver health. Cyto-Choline is provided as VitaCholine®, a patented and clinically studied choline bitartrate salt. Research shows that there is no difference in plasma choline concentrations following equivalent choline supplementation in the form of choline chloride, choline alfoscerate (GPC), phosphatidylcholine and choline bitartrate. This is why VitaCholine® provides a relatively high amount of elemental choline, which dissolves rapidly and becomes available in the body as free choline, without the need for enzymatic release.
Adolescents and adults (9 years and older): Take 1 capsule, 1 to 3 times daily.
Choline
(VitaCholine™ cholineL(+) bitartrate) 275mg
Non-medicinal ingredients: Hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose.
