Vitamin B6, zinc and magnesium are essential for many reactions that are vital to the body's proper functioning. Lack of any of these essential nutrients can have significant repercussions. Vitamin B6 deficiency is not uncommon as it can be caused by poor diet, various medications, excessive alcohol consumption and parasitic infections. Deficiency symptoms include dermatitis, chapped and sore lips, inflamed tongue and mouth, neuropathy, confusion and insomnia.
Vitamin B6 serves as a coenzyme for four classes of enzymes. It combines with an alpha-amino acid to form a compound called "Schiff's base", which serves as a substrate in four types of reactions: transamination (exchange of an amino group), racemization (redistribution of enantiomers), decarboxylation (removal of COOH groups) and various side-chain reactions depending on the enzyme involved. Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, is one of the eight water-soluble B vitamins. Vitamin B6 is involved in protein and carbohydrate metabolism, in the production of insulin and red and white blood cells, and in the synthesis of neurotransmitters, enzymes and prostaglandins. Vitamin B6 is essential in many bio-chemical pathways involving red blood cells and the immune system, as well as for central nervous system function, protein and homocysteine metabolism, and energy production. Pyridoxine is a particularly important vitamin for maintaining healthy nerve and muscle cells and is involved in the production of DNA and RNA, the body's genetic material. The human body needs vitamin B6 to make hemoglobin. Hemoglobin, found in red blood cells, transports oxygen to the tissues. Vitamin B6 also helps increase the amount of oxygen carried by hemoglobin. A deficiency in vitamin B6 can lead to a form of anemia similar to iron deficiency anemia. B6 is needed to make sphingomyelin and other sphingolipids and is also needed for proper absorption of vitamin B12.
