Berberine's effects on lipid metabolism and blood pressure regulation have attracted attention. Research indicates that it can help lower levels of LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and total cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. It may also have positive effects on blood vessel function and inflammation, helping to improve cardiovascular health.
Berberine has the potential to positively impact lipid metabolism. It can reduce levels of triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Additionally, it may increase levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the “good” cholesterol.
Zhou Y, et al published a preclinical article in 2014 exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying the lipid-lowering effects of berberine and its metabolites in human hepatoma cells. The study found that berberine and its metabolites were able to upregulate the expression of LDL receptor in human hepatoma cells.
This upregulation of the LDL receptor led to increased uptake of LDL cholesterol by cells, which is beneficial for lipid metabolism and overall cardiovascular health.
