Pyridoxal-5-phosphate, the metabolically active form of vitamin B 6 (pyridoxine), serves as a coenzyme and performs many biological functions.
The actions of pyridoxal-5-phosphate primarily involve the metabolism of amino acids and other nitrogenous compounds. In the liver, pyridoxal-5-phosphate is essential for the production of glucose from amino acids since it serves as a coenzyme for transaminase enzymes. Pyridoxal-5-phosphate is also needed in the liver and muscle to access stored glycogen for glucose production and for the synthesis of niacin from the amino acid tryptophan.
In red blood cells, pyridoxal-5-phosphate is required for hemoglobin synthesis and regulation of oxygen affinity. In addition, cellular responsiveness to steroid hormones is influenced by pyridoxal-5-phosphate.
In the nervous system, pyridoxal-5-phosphate is required for the synthesis of several neurotransmitters, including serotonin (from tryptophan), taurine, dopamine, norepinephrine, histamine, and gammaaminobutyric acid (GABA).
