CoQ10 is a fat-soluble nutrient that acts as an electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. CoQ10 is also a key intracellular antioxidant, protecting phospholipid and mitochondrial membranes from damage caused by lipid peroxidation.
CoQ10 helps minimize the occurrence of migraines, possibly by promoting normal mitochondrial function, as mitochondrial dysfunction is considered a potential contributing factor in the pathogenesis of migraines. In adult participants (aged 18-65 years) with a history of migraines, supplementation with 300 mg CoQ10 was well tolerated and drastically reduced the frequency of migraine attacks and the number of days with headache and nausea, compared to placebo treatment.
The antioxidant actions of CoQ10 help maintain and support heart health. In participants who consumed 300 mg of CoQ10 supplements daily for 1 month, peak VO2, pulse O2, and extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity increased significantly compared with the placebo group. Low extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity is considered a biomarker of high levels of extracellular oxidative stress.
