Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid found in neuronal cell membranes that supports cognitive function. PS serves to maintain optimal levels of membrane fluidity, which is necessary for the proper activities of enzymes and receptors. It also mediates the activities of several neurotransmitters, including norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial involving 73 elderly individuals with mild memory impairment, supplementation with 300 mg of PS for 6 months significantly improved word recall rates. The improvement in cognitive function lasted for 3 months after treatment. PS can be metabolized into the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which contains choline and can influence synaptic plasticity, the ability to enhance transmission within a synapse. Increasing synaptic plasticity is central to improving memory and learning. PS supplementation may increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein that may influence neuron survival and may have a role in improving memory and learning.
