The main bioactive ingredient in these extracts is berberine. Recent research has shown that berberine prevents bacteria from adhering to the gastric mucosa. Berberine also controls the transport of ions and water in the epithelial cells of the intestine. It helps maintain the balance between electrolytes and water, resulting in an antidiarrheal effect. Berberine can increase the expression of Na+, H+ exchanger, and aquaporin, which improves the absorption of sodium and water, respectively. Berberine also promotes the formation of correct intestinal epithelial nexus and decreases the permeability of these cells to promote the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal barrier. During stages of low contractility, berberine stimulates the jejunum by activating muscarinic receptors, resulting in increased intestinal motility and a mild laxative effect.
