Plant sterols are similar in structure to cholesterol, but their side chain groups differ. Plant sterol intake leads to a continual cycle of reduced dietary cholesterol uptake, cholesterol utilization increasing bile acid synthesis, reduced bile acid re-uptake, and increased cholesterol excretion in the feces. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, daily supplementation with 1.3 g of sterol esters for four weeks reduced total cholesterol and VLDL cholesterol levels by approximately 5 and 4%, respectively, in 16 adults with hypercholesterolemia.
