Psyllium, or Plantago ovata, is a rich source of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber absorbs water to form a gel, increasing stool bulk when taken with an appropriate amount of water; thus, it promotes the formation of larger, softer stools for healthy bowel movements. As stool moves through the intestine, it incorporates and eliminates other waste products and toxins present on the intestinal walls. In the colon, soluble fiber is slowly fermented by the intestinal microflora, which also helps increase stool bulk. The fermentation process produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which have a protective effect on the healthy functioning of colon cells, as they represent a very important source of energy for the colon and can regulate transit in the colon. Adults: Add 1 scoop to 240 to 360 ml (8 to 12 oz) of water. Shake, stir, or blend vigorously and drink immediately. Follow with an 8 to 12 oz glass of water.
