Gastrazyme provides specific nutrients, including vitamin U complex, chlorophyllins, and vitamin A, all ingredients known to support the health of the gastrointestinal tract, which can become stressed due to normal, everyday factors. Early studies recognized the effectiveness of raw cabbage juice in normalizing gastric and intestinal function. The glutamine and methionine derivatives present in this juice are believed to be the active ingredients. Particular attention has focused on methionine S-methylsulfonium (MMS) in its chlorinated form. MMS is found in a variety of fruits and vegetables, such as cabbage. Studies have shown that MMS supports the normal healing process of the stomach after exposure to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs). Traditionally, this compound has been referred to as "vitamin U," although it does not meet the classic definition of a vitamin.
