Aloe vera is used in herbal medicine as an emollient to help soothe irritation and inflammation of the gastrointestinal system. Used in herbal medicine to help support and maintain a healthy digestive system. L-Glutamine, the most abundant free amino acid in the body, is very important for maintaining the function of gastrointestinal cells and stimulated immune cells. It is an important transporter of nitrogen (and carbon) in the body and therefore plays a vital role in wound healing. Although glutamine can be synthesized by the intestinal mucosa, during periods of physiological stress when needs are unlikely to be met by the body alone, atrophy of the intestinal epithelium, ulceration, and even necrosis are possible. L-glutamine is metabolized to ammonia and glutamate. Arabinogalactan, a polysaccharide derived from larch, provides fermentable fiber to this formula and additionally has immunostimulatory properties. It minimizes ammonia synthesis and absorption, enhances the production of short-chain fatty acids, and increases the population of intestinal microflora. Licorice Root Extract 10:1 (deglycyrrhized) is a concentrated extract that has been processed to remove glycyrrhizin, thus eliminating any risk of side effects associated with licorice. It is anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and has laxative and soothing effects. Administration of deglycyrrhized licorice has been shown to reduce aspirin-induced mucosal damage. Aloe leaf extract (standardized to 50% polysaccharides), used for thousands of years, is perhaps best known for healing damaged epithelial tissues, including the intestinal lining. Despite the lack of published scientific studies, anecdotal evidence suggests that aloe vera helps inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. In some individuals, it can increase digestive tract transit time, improve protein digestion and absorption, increase stool bulk, and normalize stool bacteria when high yeast levels previously existed[4]. The aloe extract used in GlutAloeMine® does not have a laxative effect because the bitter ingredients have been removed.
