The human digestive tract contains over 400 bacterial species, and bacterial balance must be maintained for a healthy gut. Probiotics compete with pathogenic bacteria for colonization of the digestive tract and promote the presence of beneficial bacteria. In addition to decreasing bacterial survival, probiotics strengthen the epithelial barrier. They control permeability by monitoring the integrity of tight junctions and prevent pathogenic adhesion to epithelial cells by increasing the release of mucins on the intestinal surface. Together, these processes decrease the entry of gut bacteria into the circulation. Probiotics have a transient impact on the host microflora; once ingested, their numbers decrease or disappear. Because the composition of the microflora in children remains relatively unchanged after infancy, it is highly dependent on diet, even more so than in adults.
