Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoid pigments essential for human health. Structurally, the key difference between lutein and zeaxanthin is their ionic ring. The hydroxyl group of lutein and zeaxanthin, which are xanthophylls, allows them to cross the blood-ocular and blood-brain barriers. Lutein and zeaxanthin are mainly found in the lens and macular region of the eyes.
Lutein and zeaxanthin can:
- Contribute to eye health, especially against sun damage
- Reduce the risk of developing cataracts
- Improve macular pigment optical density
- Protect against age-related macular degeneration through their antioxidant properties
