Iron is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth. It is essential to most forms of life, particularly human physiology. Iron is an integral part of proteins involved in oxygen transport and storage: hemoglobin, myoglobin, and ferritin. Iron, as a component of the protein hemoglobin, transports oxygen from the lungs to different parts of the body. Hemoglobin accounts for almost two-thirds of the iron in the body and carries vital oxygen to tissues and organs. About one-sixth of the body's iron is stored as ferritin for use when dietary intake is not sufficient.
Iron must be maintained at balanced levels in the body - an excess can lead to toxicity and a lack can impair optimal health. Iron must be carefully absorbed by the body. Adequate intake through diet and supplementation is therefore imperative to achieve a healthy balance.
